Springfield Veteran’s Day Parade

Honor and pay respect to all Veterans with a parade on November 09, 2013 at 10:00 am in downtown Springfield Missouri. The parade route is about 1 and 1/2 miles long and the parade will last about an hour.

The roots of our parade originate in an Act of Congress – Act (52 Stat. 351; 5 U. S. Code, Sec. 87a) approved May 13, 1938, made the 11th of November and originally called Armistice Day. In 1954, after World War II had required the greatest mobilization of soldiers, sailors, Marines and airmen in the Nation’s history; after American forces had fought aggression in Korea, the 83rd Congress, at the urging of the veterans service organizations, amended the Act of 1938 by striking out the word “Armistice” and inserting in its place the word “Veterans.” With the approval of this legislation (Public Law 380) on June 1, 1954, November 11th became a day to honor American veterans of all wars. The parade will start at the intersection of Grand and South.  It will travel north, running through the square and exit the square going east on St. Louis.  The parade will end at the corner of Trafficway and John Q. Hammons Pkwy. A full map of the route can be found at the parade’s official website http://www.swmoveteransdayparade.com. The Grand Marshal will be staff sergeant George Copeland of the U.S. Army Air Corps.  Copeland was shot down over Germany during World War II and completed the black march – a 473 mile march over 86 days in the German winter – as a prisoner of war. The parade will include 4 deputy grand marshals Sergeant Jim Vanderhoof, Corporal Bob Steffke, Chief Petty Officer Lloyd Hoover, and Private First Class Dale Irvine. Also present will be special guest Major General Leslie Smith, the commanding general at Fort Leonard Wood.
